ColorBAT is proud to offer web site space to the Aqua-Terra Club of Central Pennsylvania.

These pictures were taken during the Club's visit to Joe Pye Ponds Aquatic Nursery, June 13, 2004, Tuesday, 7:00pm

Joe Pye's Ponds Aquatic Nursery, 315 Fairview Road, New Providence PA 17560   717-786-9055.

From Lancaster take Rt. 222 South. turn right onto Main Street in New Providence. (This turn is a bit tricky, so stay alert or you'll drive right past it.) Take the 3rd right onto Cinder Road. Take the first left onto Fairview Road. Driveway is 1/2 mile on left.

If you've never been to Joe Pye's Ponds, get real good directions (see above)... it is WAYYYYYY back in the country! But, it was well worth the drive. These folks are super knowledgeable and graciously shared their experience with us. Thank you, Barry and Julie!!

Barry Longenecker was one of our Hosts. He showed us how to re-pot a lily plant. For all the details, CLICK HERE

Julie Nestke was our other Host. She explained that they have over 13 acres and grow all their plants by "organic" methods. They have counted over a 100 species of birds and about 8 different species of toads and frogs.

One of several lily ponds. These ponds are all man-made, about 3 feet deep, rubber-blanket lined, and fed from the spring water in a near by quarry

There are several shallow ponds that can be fitted with plastic sheeting for early spring growth

Another of the several lily ponds

Another view of the area

Another pond. Notice that the lilies are over lapping each other. This is a sure sign of over crowding. Joe Pye raises lilies most for sale at the wholesale level. However, they are open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Here is there large greenhouse where they can continue growing their stock over the cold winter months.

Julie is packaging a blooming water hyacinth plant. these plants are fast growing tropicals that have large root structures that go down into the water. They are "floating" plants and help to clean the water of things that would be toxic to the fish.

The Almost Black hardy lily.

The camera mis-fired when I shot this Almost Black lily, but isn't a beautiful "mistake"!

These are hardy, Blue Pickerel

I believe that we were told that this is a Florida Sunset lily

There were thousands of frogs all over the place. In small, home ponds, frogs are easy to grow (start with tadpoles), but as they reach this size, they WILL eat both baby fish up to 5-6 inches long, as well as ALL of your fish eggs that might be spawned.

A pond of Little Sue lilies

This is the tropical Mosaic Plant. Isn't it beautiful! I tried, and failed, to hold one of these over last winter. With some helpful tips from Julie, I'll try again this winter.
